ThrowBack Thursday!!

Happy Spring Folks!! I don’t know about anyone else but for some reason when spring comes around I get into this cleaning/purging frenzy. I overly clean my house, get rid of old clothes and a bunch of things that I really don’t need. Since today is Thursday I think it’s fit to implement a ThrowBack Thursday.

One thing I’ve learned about myself is that I am a picture hoarder. I don’t know why I never like to delete pictures but I have had over 3,000 pictures on my phone at one time, 🙈🙈. And I am ashamed to say this but over half of those pictures are selfies…*don’t judge me lol*.  Anyways as I was deleting hundreds of pictures off my phone when I came across the photo below. It brought a smile to my face. It was the day after I chopped off all of my relaxed hair and joined the Natural Hair Community.

Big Chop Pic

Oh what a joy it was to have no hair worries. To wake up and just go. It was a great time in my life because it felt like a fresh start. However, I got the harshest feedback as well. I remember my Father saying how God had given me beautiful hair and now I’m bald. And that he didn’t even recognize me because I looked like a boy. 😭 😭 😭   Oh that comment hit me to my core and I cried for a couple of days afterwards. Eventually the look grew on me and everyone else. After all it was just hair and surely it would grow back. I can honestly say it was one of the best hair decisions I could have made. And I would do it again in a heartbeat.  😊😊.

It’s My Anniversary!!

Good Morning My Good People!

This post is long overdue but better late than never! 🙂 In June I celebrated my 2 year loc anniversary!!! It still amazes me that I’ve actually kept them in this long. But every day I fall more and more in love with them and remain very proud of my decision to loc my hair. Below are some updates:

1. I no longer band and/or braid (if you are a Sisterlocker you will know exactly what this means).

2. I can now use moisturizer (which is awesome because dry hair/scalp is no bueno!!).

3. I now have some hang time (yes LAWD! I can throw these babies in a ponytail and have some hangage lol).

4. I am not fully locked yet. The shafts of my strands are fully locked however my ends have not sealed yet.

5. My re-tightenings are every 6 weeks ( I started off with every 4 weeks).

6. I still get slippage. That’s primarily because of my hair texture, so in essence this will be inevitable for me.

7. Curls are my bestfriends (primarily because I have a sensitive scalp and most updos give me a headache).

8. Comparison pictures are below.

Locking Phases and Natural Oils!

Morning Folks!

Haven’t posted alllll week…did you’ll miss me?! 🙂 Today I wanted to write some more about my Sisterlocks. Prior to making the decision of getting Sisterlocks I wanted to know as much as I possibly could about the process of locking and what oils are great for natural hair. I honestly want my journey as natural as possible. Upon my research I came across the 2 pictures below. They basically speak for themselves. The first explains the stages of the locking journey. I found it to be quite helpful because I can actually know what ‘stage’ my hair is in at different points in my journey (I’m in phase 2 btw).

The second photo explains the best oils for natural hair. We woman can be product junkies…OH I DEFINITELY DON’T MISS THOSE DAYS!!! So it’s great to know of products that will help bring moisture and shine to my locs. Right now I am not able to use any oils in my scalp but I am happy to have done research about what natural oils will potentially work best.

I hope all of this info helps some of you! If you have any other natural products that you use that you find quite helpful please feel free to share!

Loc’d For Life!!

One of the main reasons why I started blogging was to be able to share my Sisterlocks journey. I realized that I haven’t really said much about them so this blog post is dedicated to my babies. I call them my babies because I have to care for them as if they were my kids. Nourish them, maintain them, clean them, etc. That way they will grow from babies to mature adults 🙂

Lets start with my Sisterlocks Birth Certificate!

  • Installation Date(s): June 8-15th
Typically an install would take two days but y’all know I had to be different. My sisterlock consultant had to do mine in a weeks time.

  • Number of Locks:  532 (yes I’ve actually counted)

  • Size of Locks: My locks are considered Small/Medium

  • Locking Pattern: I actually don’t know…probably should find out right?! Lol

  • Length of Hair at Install: 8 inches

  • Location of Install: Dumfries, VA

I will say my decision to lock my hair has been a great decision. I love the low maintenance! No more having to “do” my hair before work. Just get up and go. In about a month I will celebrate 1 year and this truly excites me. I can’t wait to see what the next few years will bring!

Below is a pic from the day after my installation:

Being Cost Efficient!

This past weekend (Saturday, April 26th) I attended a fundraising Gala for the Northern Virginia Urban League Young Professionals Network. $80 for my ticket, $40 for my nails, $55 for my dress, and the list of expenses goes on. Since this was a huge event for me I wanted to get a cute hairstyle that would complete my look. So I decided to price a style I found while searching sisterlock updos. I sent a stylist the picture below. She said it would cost me $65. Now $65 doesn’t sound like much but for me it was a lot. Probably because I spent so much money already. So I told myself that I would re-create this style. I was determined to style my hair and replicate this style on my own. And I am proud to say that I did! I am quite happy with how it turned out! See for yourself! And let me know what you think!
