Happy Haitian Flag Day to all my Haitians and those who love us! Today’s post is dedicated to giving you some insight on the history of this beautiful flag!
The Haitian flag originated after the Haitian people successfully revolted from the French. Jean-Jacques Dessalines (a Haitian Revolution Leader) took a French flag and ripped out the white center, which he discarded. He then asked Catherine Flon, his god-daughter, to sew the remaining bands together. With the white part removed, the blue was taken to represent Haiti’s black citizens and the red represented the gens de couleur (French term meaning people of color). Today is the anniversary of that commemorative day and is celebrated by Haitians all over the world. We are proud of its purpose and continue to celebrate its meaning to us! 😊
