Guess What I Learned To Do?!

If you guessed learned how to ride a bicycle then you guessed correctly!  I’m sure you’ve already chuckled or even had a full ROTFL (rolling on the floor laughing) moment and that’s ok because guess what?! I am proud of this accomplishment!  ☺☺

Bike Class

Never learning how to ride a bike has always been something I’ve been ashamed of and at times, felt like I was limited to only a certain type of physical activities. It’s disheartening when everyone else can do something and you can’t. So this year I was determined to learn! I didn’t know who was going to teach me or how I was going to learn but I set my mind on figuring out a way!

After much research my Sister found this association that provided classes on learning to ride. I signed up immediately. This past weekend was the moment of truth. I was extremely nervous the night before my class and the day of. Honestly, I almost backed out because I was scared of falling off or even not catching on at all. However, I have a determined personality and once I set my mind on something it’s really hard for me to not follow through. So with every inch of my bad nerves I mustered up the strength to attend the class. In approximately 1.5 hours (the class was 3 hours long) I was riding a bicycle! 👏👏👏 Can you imagine the pure excitement I felt after conquering this daunting task?! I was on Cloud 9. Now I am not going to say it was easy, because trust me it wasn’t, but after getting the hang of it I was a bicycle riding machine!!! ☺☺☺

Here is what I learned this past weekend….

  1. Never let your fear stop you from doing something that you’ve always wanted to do.
  2. If you fall, that’s ok. Dust yourself off and do it again. Keep doing it until you’ve mastered it.
  3. People will laugh at you. So what?! It’s your life, do what makes you happy!
  4. You are NEVER too old to learn something new. NEVER!
  5. Nothing is impossible! With the right mindset and a positive attitude you can do it. If you want it, GO GET IT!
  6. Life is too short to be scared of taking risks. There is no reward when there is no risk.
  7. Trust in your God given abilities. It may not be easy (physically or mentally) to do something that appears daunting BUT you can do it!
  8. Don’t talk yourself out of it, lol.
  9. Be proud of your accomplishment!
  10. LIVE. YOUR. LIFE. UNAPOLOGETICALLY!

If you live in the DMV and would like to learn for yourself you can visit the Washington Area Bicycle Association (click here) for information on classes. Trust me you’ll be glad you did it! ☺

Hello June!

Anyone else excited that it’s June?! I am because we are half way done with 2017!! I feel like June is a good month to reflect on the first half of the year and see what things have gone right, what has gone wrong and what we can do to finish the year off strong.

June is a month to re-visit your New Year’s resolutions and see if you’ve continued to work on them or see if you need to re-adjust. How do you feel you have done? I’ll be honest, I haven’t held true to some of those things I said I’d work on (lol), BUT it’s never too late to acknowledge that and continue to work on being a better me. Some progress is better than no progress. We don’t change overnight, but if we consciously know what we need to work on we will likely make great efforts to make those changes.

So cheers to making it to the half way point! May the other half of your year be greater than the first half! 🙂

Wisdom Wednesday: Maturity

Good Morning Virtual Family!

In an attempt to hold myself accountable to my blog I’ve decided to implement 3 new themes, which I am actually very excited about. On any given week I’ll either do a Motivational Monday, Wisdom Wednesday or Flashback Friday!! As cliche as they may seem, I think it will be fun to come up with something that will either make you laugh, think or simply make you smile.

To kick off this new theme today I’m sharing this meme for Wisdom Wednesday.

Wisdom Wed Meme

As I’ve gotten older this meme has become my truth and I’ve accepted it. My peace of mind, self-respect, values, morals and self worth are more important to me than holding on to a person that threatens any one of them. I’ve learned that some folks weren’t meant to stay. They are meant to play their role for the time they are in your life and they will either be a lesson or blessing. Either way, accept it for what it is and continue to live in your truth, life will be much easier that way.  😊

You Got Your Locks From Where?!

While scrolling through my FB feed this morning I came across an article titled, “Beware Your Dreadlocks May Just Be From The Morgue”.

Wait What

I was like “what?!” As I read the article all kinds of thoughts came to mind. Like, “umm… people do this?” and “hmmm… you mean to tell me someone could be rocking a deceased wo(man)’s locks?!”

We all know that today is all about instant gratification. And I’m sorry to say this, but this is particularly true about Millennials. We want it & we want it now!! However, this new trend, the grafting of locks, has all kinds of crazy written all over it. For instance, growing your own locks is a journey. And in that journey you go through highs & lows (with growing the locks themselves & in life overall). So your locks tell a story. And for someone to take another person’s locks & attach them to their own hair seems like a bad omen waiting to happen. Their hair journey is not your own. And I’ve seen folks cut off their locks for a fresh start. Now why would you want to take someone else’s journey (whether good or bad) and make it your own?!

Additionally, I couldn’t even imagine rocking a deceased wo(man)’s locks. The article does reference a salon that vets the locks before they purchase them; however, I would still be leery of the source. Oh & can you imagine the possibility of getting lice or any other disease that may come from the locks themselves? My assumption is that getting either is unlikely but the thought itself is quite disturbing.

Lastly, one of the things my lock journey has taught me is patience. Instant gratification is awesome but the process of obtaining and practicing patience is a better reward.

Even though I am totally turned off by the idea of grafting someone else’s locks there seems to be some positives. First of all, you don’t have to grow the locks yourself. It can take years to get to a decent length & to have fully locked hair. With this method you get to cut down the amount of time. Additionally, the person selling their matured locks can make a killing from a buyer. Lastly, the person getting the new locks has a new found confidence & gets to fast track the locking process. In that case everyone wins!

So what are your thoughts, would you consider this option?
